EORI number: here’s what you need to know about the European customs number

Selling online or planning to develop your business internationally? Perhaps you already know about the EORI number.

What is the EORI number?

The EORI number (registration and identification number of the economic operator) has been introduced for uniform identification of economic operators in the EU, for interaction with customs authorities, and can be considered as a kind of «customs number».

The main idea is to simplify customs clearance, which is becoming increasingly automated. The EORI number is required for all correspondence between the operator and the authorities, whether statements, declarations or other documents. In conclusion: if you need to perform customs duties, you need the EORI number.

What does the number look like?

The EORI number consists of the country code at the beginning, followed by a number consisting of 10-15 digits. As an economic operator in Europe you have to check the validity of the number on each shipment to the customs territory of the European Union. However, this rule does not apply to individuals.

In which countries do you need the EORI number?

EORI numbers are used in the UK and the European Union. Other countries may have similar Customs identification numbers.

EORI UK numbers are Customs identification numbers. They differ from the EU EORI numbers, which are valid in all EU member states. After Brexit, HMRC began assigning customs identification numbers to every business that traded its goods internationally from or to the UK. As mentioned above, it is important to note that these are identification numbers used only for customs purposes in the UK.

The EU EORI number is a unique identification number for customs purposes in all EU countries. This number is required for imports to the EU from non-EU countries. This number will be displayed in the import documents and will be used to identify the enterprises when dealing with Customs.

Who needs the EORI number in the EU?

Every company and individual requires an EORI number for customs clearance and for the import or export of products to any country of the European Union. The same applies if the products are exported and leave the European Union. It is also used by customs authorities for security, data analysis and statistical purposes.

In addition to vendors, forwarders and carriers also need an EORI number to identify themselves with the customs authorities. In addition, companies that are located outside the EU but trade within Europe must also receive an EORI number.

Subsequently, the data and the corresponding EORI number are used for all Customs crossings, regardless of whether the products are imported or exported to the country of registration or to another European Union country. Therefore, it does not matter in which country the company or individual applies for an EORI number. Exceptions are companies and persons from the EU who must apply for an EORI number in the country in which they reside. All non-EU organizations are usually registered in a country where they can communicate with authorities in the national language or where they are first registered as VAT payers or in a single service centre.

Who needs an EORI number in the UK?

Economic operators who want to trade goods that import or export between the UK (England, Scotland and Wales) and other countries , need the EORI UK number.

You do not need an EORI number if you are transporting goods for specific use as a private person.

You may need the registration and identification number of the economic operator (EORI number) if you are moving goods:

  • Between the United Kingdom (England, Scotland and Wales) or the Isle of Man and any other country (including the EU)
  • If you want to import or export goods between the UK and Northern Ireland.
  • Between Northern Ireland and Outside the EU
  • If you wish to import or export goods between the UK and the Channel Islands. However, if you are doing business in the Channel Islands and are importing or exporting to the UK, you do not need an EORI number unless you use HMRC customs systems such as import and export handling (CHIEF).

How to use the number?

The EORI number is required from the first second and should already exist before the first stage of the import or export process. For example, in Germany, a company requires an EORI number to apply for permits with the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA). In addition, the electronic customs system ATLAS, as well as online customs registration plus (IAA Plus) work only if there is a valid EORI number.

Trade in Europe without EORI number

The absence of an EORI number means that intra-EU trade, imports, exports and other movements are illegal. Do you import? Do you export? You need the EORI number.

Thanks to our team you can get the EORI number in the chosen jurisdiction. If you are interested in individual information and receiving EORI, feel free to contact us! Order a call today!
